Borderline Personality Disorder affects an estimated 2% of the population. 6-10 million Americans suffer. Many are misdiagnosed and mistreated for similar symptoms of depression, anxiety, anorexia, bulimia, and bipolar disorder.
75 - 90% of individuals living with BPD are women. You likely love them as a mother, sister, daughter, spouse, girlfriend, or friend.
11% of all mental health outpatients and 20% of all psychiatric inpatients display characteristics of BPD. Hospitalizations and criminal proceedings cost US taxpayers billions of dollars. With expanded health insurance coverage for medication, therapy, and skills-based treatment programs which have proven to be effective for BPD, millions of intelligent, skilled individuals would return to the workplace and their families and effectively contribute to society.
Despite its prevalence, BPD is the most unknown and stigmatized mental illness within the public and mental health communities. You are as likely to know someone with BPD as you are unlikely to know the symptoms or causes of this complex condition. The absence of a positive public role model and negative media portrayals continue to keep many individuals with BPD in a state of shame and hiding and rejected as 'too difficult' by their families, friends, professionals, and healthcare systems.
10% will commit suicide. A higher rate of tragedy than any other mental illness. An escape which rather than silencing the emotional pain and heartache, calls attention to the critical need for increased education, research, and treatment support.
